The dataset is areas of planted Ancient woodland inventory (AWI) woodland classified as AWI 1 (ancient), AWI 2 (probably ancient) and AWI 3 (possibly ancient). The AWI woodland classes meet UK criteria as ancient woodland sites. The management of AWI woodland is through forest plans for landscape design, timber production and conservation with the long term aim to restoration. Identification of the AWI woodland in the Forest Service managed estate was done with the aid of the Woodland Trust dataset for Ancient Woodland Inventory. Ancient woodland Inventory woodland is a Secondary Land Use Category (SLUC) attribute in the Forest Service sub-compartment database. The category is sub-divided into sub-types to provide additional forest management information. The sub types are AW1, AW2 and AW3.
